Tatami & Training mats
Floor mats are used for many types of martial arts and can be used at home as well as in the club.
A tatami originates from Japan and is a mat made of straw and wood. It has now become a general term used in the martial arts world for mats. The original tatami is exactly twice as long as it is wide. This was designated as a full mat, where a mat consisting of 1x1 meter was designated as a half mat.
Here at Nippon, we of course sell both half and full mats.
Over time, the design of a tatami has evolved to become more than just a mat. The brand new designs are called Puzzle-mats and are a mat with edges like a puzzle. This allows the user to assemble the mats so that they do not come apart during training.
The mats are sold in different colors and thicknesses and are developed according to the martial arts they are to be used for.
A tatami or a puzzle mat is a must have if you practice leg sweeps, throws or floor fighting. The mat ensures a good and solid surface and good shock absorption. This gives the fighters the full pressure during training and for battle.
Tips & Tricks
If you then choose to buy a tatami mat or a puzzle mat, the mats will move a little during training unless you have filled the entire room with mats so that they cannot slide somewhere. To prevent them from slipping, you can put duct tape on the floor around the edge of your mat area. This tape provides extra friction between the floor and the mat, reducing the chance of the mats slipping.
