The history of the judo gi
In 1882, the martial art of judo was founded by the Japanese Jigoro Kano, but gis have been used in martial arts for a long time before that. Back then, gis looked like bathrobes made of a thin material, with very long sleeves and pants.
Throughout the 20th century, judo began to become more popular, so both the sleeves and trousers were made shorter and the gi thicker, so that it better suited the demands of judo. Since then, the gi has been modernized countless times, and both sizes, stitching and materials have been improved to be able to withstand throws and other wear and tear.
IJF approved gis
Today, there are over 40 million people who practice judo, which requires a federation that can keep track of the rules being observed for the international competitions. This federation is called IJF, which stands for International Judo Federation.
If you intend to participate in competitions internationally, it is therefore necessary to have a judo gi that is approved by the IJF, in order to be allowed to fight.
When a gi is IJF approved, it meets the requirements for correct placement of marks, length, stitching, thickness etc.
If you have any doubts about our rules and regulations, you are always welcome to contact us.
Nippon Sport naturally offers IJF approved GreenHill judo gis
- look at the top of the page and select the gi with the IJF brand.
