A BJJ gi is the outfit you wear when practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It is a training uniform used in BJJ adapted from Japanese keikogi. It is usually made of cotton and consists of a heavy jacket and trousers with a belt indicating the fighter's rank.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu suit
If you're new to BJJ and about to start training, you might not really know what to wear. Most often, it is the case that you should wear a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu suit, also called a gi. It is a kind of "uniform" for training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, adapted from keikogi (稽古着) used in modern Japanese martial arts.
Typically, a gi consists of a heavy cotton jacket, reinforced drawstring trousers and a belt that communicates rank. However, there are some Jiu-Jitsu school systems that avoid using a gi.
General regulations for BJJ suits
When it comes to international BJJ championships, the only colors allowed are white, black or blue. In addition, according to article 8 of the IBJJF rules, a gi used in competition must also comply with certain specifications.
Among other things, your gi must be made of cotton or similar material and be in good condition. The material must not be excessively thick or hard to the point where it will hinder the opponent. The colors can be black, white or blue, no combined colors.
The jacket should be long enough down to the thighs, the sleeves should reach the wrist with the arms extended in front of the body. The sleeve must follow the official measurements according to the IBJJF (this is measured from the shoulder to the wrist).
Belt width should be 4–5 cm, with belt color corresponding to the practitioner's rank. The belt must be tied around the waist with a double knot, tight enough to ensure the gi is closed. An extremely worn/discolored belt may need to be replaced before competition.
Athletes may not compete with torn gis, sleeves or pants that are not the correct length, or with T-shirts underneath (except for women).
A BJJ practitioner may not paint their gi. Exceptions may be made for team competitions.
In addition to the above requirements, pockets of any kind are not permitted in a gi used in tournaments.
What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu?
The primary difference between Gi and No-gi jiu-jitsu is the clothing. The standard uniform in BJJ you will wear is the cotton gi, also known as a "kimono", based on the traditional kimonos worn in Japanese martial arts since the 1920s. A gi is basically a heavy cotton jacket with a thick neckline, drawstring trousers and a cotton belt colored to denote your rank.
In the absence of a gi, you will wear a rashguard top plus shorts similar to those you would wear to the pool or beach. You can also wear leggings under your shorts. Most BJJ clothing is made from a stretchy material such as polyester.
People who practice No-Gi jiu-jitsu claim that it is easier to understand and has more practical uses. It is rare to see people in traditional Japanese kimonos on the streets. In a real street fight, using the Gi BJJ will make you look like a real threat. Many others find Gi BJJ to be a superior option because it mimics situations where an attacker might grab your clothes.
