Aikido
Aikido is a Japanese martial art that was developed by Ueshiba Morihei at the beginning of the 20th century. The different parts of the word can be divided as Ai-Ki-Doog and can be translated as follows:
Ai = harmony
Ki = life energy or universal energy
Do = road "philosophical principle".
The term Aikido can often be translated in several different ways, for example as:
- The path of harmony in interaction with energy
- Path to the harmony of forces
- The path of harmony with the energy of the universe
Ueshiba Morihei
Ueshiba Morihei left extensive writings on the meaning of Aikido. There are different branches within Aikido, founded by the various Aikido practitioners who have been Ueshiba Morihei's students.
Aikido should be seen as a peaceful martial art. The central idea and principle of Aikido is not to put hard against hard, but to redirect and divert the attacker's energy. The techniques thus focus on throws and grips rather than punches and kicks. The goal is not to injure the attacker, but to put him in a situation where he is held down and distanced from further attacks. This diversion of the opponent's attack through the use of energy requires many years of training and follows a progression where attacks are initially agreed upon and later happen freely (randori).
Since many movements in Aikido include sword and spear fighting, and therefore exercises with the Bokken (wooden sword), Jo staff and tanto (wooden knife) are part of the training. The attire during training is a Judo Gi or special Aikido suit, or in some cases for the advanced - a Hakama (special skirt-like trousers).
