It doesn't matter if you are an experienced boxer or an amateur, it is equally important to use boxing wraps. You should wear these under your boxing gloves, to get the right support and stability. They help protect your hands and wrists in a good way, both during training and during matches.
All practitioners of boxing and martial arts are familiar with the traditional boxing wrap. It is used to give the wrist support and it also protects your knuckles. Then it is the case that it also has some mental benefits. You feel safer when you have your boxing handwraps on. It can give you increased concentration and that you dare to make harder shots, or to train more intensively.
What does a boxing wrap look like?
Most boxing wraps look the same in terms of how they are attached, although there may be variations in color and other things. Boxing wraps consist of a simple band, or wrap, that has a strap at one end and a Velcro strap at the other. Sometimes they are called hand wraps.
Usually, every boxer has his own method of putting on his boxing wraps. However, it usually comes with an instruction when you buy your boxing pads. But feel free to take the help of a more experienced boxer for help with how to wrap and fasten them.
Elastic and non-elastic boxing wraps
Boxing wraps are made in both elastic and non-elastic materials. As for the boxing wrap that is elastic, it is mostly used by fitness practitioners, exercisers and beginners. This is because these are usually easier to put on and they mold to the hands. However, you can of course use an elastic boxing wrap even if you are already a more advanced boxer.
The non-elastic boxing wrap is slightly more difficult to put on than the non-elastic one, but provides better support for hands and fingers.
How do I best fasten my wrap?
Attaching your boxing wrap correctly is very important. It has to fit comfortably and it has to be wrapped correctly so that it is safe for you to wear them. If you put on your boxing wrap incorrectly, it can cause injuries instead of protecting you from them.
You should make sure that your boxing wrap does not wrinkle, especially around the knuckles. A single small crease can give you pain in your hands after just a couple of strokes. Start by wrapping the small band around your thumb. Then you gradually wrap the rest of the band around your wrist, your knuckles and your palm. Finally, you wrap it around the wrist again and close with the velcro.
If your fingers turn white, it means that you have attached your boxing wrap too tightly. How tight or loose it should fit is often individual, but it should not be so tight that it gives you white fingers, or so loose that it creases in the glove.
