History of Jiu-Jitsu
Jiu-Jitsu has its origins from the Sengoku era in the Muromachi period (1532) and was actually founded by Takenouchi Hisamori who was a highly respected military tactician and lord from Mimasaka province. Takenouchi combined various Japanese martial arts that were actively used on the battlefield in situations where close combat was unavoidable, such as if one was unable to wield the weapon. In neighboring nations such as China and Okinawa, martial arts such as karate were developed to train striking techniques. Whereas Japanese Jiu-Jitsu focuses on throwing, immobilizing, locking and choking which was largely more effective on a battlefield, as selling from the hands could not do much damage to a person wearing armor on the battlefield.
The purpose of Jiu-Jitsu
The original form of Jiu-Jitsu is Takenouchi - Ryu which primarily focuses on parrying counter attacks from long weapons such as swords and spears using a dagger or other small weapons. In the early 17th century during the Edo period, Jiu-Jitsu's development continued due to the strict laws and requirements imposed by the Tokugawa shogunate whose aim was to reduce the number of wars. But also the influence of the Chinese social philosophy Neo-Confucianism, which was achieved during Hideyoshi's invasions of Korea and which was spread all over Japan, had an influence.
